Author Meet and Greet at Eldred (Pa.) Public Library and Historical Society
Author Ruby to visit Eldred library
7PM on February 22, 2018

F.L. Ruby, author of “Sean Roberts,” will appear for a meet and greet at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Eldred Area Free Library and Historical Society.
F.L. Ruby wasn’t looking to write a fiction novel when he started his dissertation. But what emerged from his research efforts was “Sean Roberts,” a novel loosely based on his own Irish ancestry and life experiences.
“It just took on a life of its own,” said Ruby, who will travel to McKean County in February for a meet and greet at the Eldred Area Free Library and Historical Society. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 22.
“I know there have been some folks in the area who have read my novel,” the Rochester, N.Y., area resident said, explaining this will give him and his readers a chance to meet each other.
He will be signing books and likely will be reading excerpts from the book, too, he said. He has questions about “Sean Roberts” he would like to pose to attendees.
“I will definitely be talking about excerpts from the book,” said Ruby. “It’s just an opportunity to meet community members.
“I’m excited about it,” he said, saying he loves to talk about his project.
The main character is a college English professor who returns to his college in upstate New York, said Ruby, who explained, “I think, in another world, I’d love to be a college professor teaching English.”
Ruby’s experiences in the “real world” have also made their way to the pages of “Sean Roberts.”
The fictional story is based on Ruby’s Irish ancestry, which includes family members named Roberts from County Cork, Ireland.
Adding to the feeling of Ireland is an Irish pub featured in the book. He used a description of a real Rochester area Irish pub in the novel.
The rocky history between Ireland and England is highlighted through the relationship of the fictional Sean Roberts and his fiancee, Phoebe Webb, who is English.
Ruby said his novel “is really a love story.”
“It’s a new adventure for me,” he said about writing “Sean Roberts,” his first novel.
Ruby was working on his dissertation for his doctorate degree from Columbia University, and “I found that while I was writing it, I enjoyed researching.” While he was more restricted to research rules during his dissertation, “Writing fiction is almost more fun because I can let it go.”
